The first in-depth investigation into one of England’s most enigmatic and engaging bands, Time Flies is the second book by Rich Wilson, the author of the acclaimed Lifting Shadows, the Authorised biography of Dream Theater. Drawing on original interviews with former band members, friends and colleagues, Rich has compiled a fascinating history of Porcupine Tree.
Time Flies describes the genesis of Porcupine Tree from founder Steven Wilson’s bedroom through their entire existence, reviewing their seventeen year career and ten studio albums. Drawing on original and archive interviews with band members, friends and people connected to Porcupine Tree, this unauthorised biography offers a perfectly complete critical look at arguably the UK’s last great prog rock band.
The book is available in two versions, both produced to the highest standards. The Classic edition is a 272-page hardback presented in a choice of four different cover designs. It’s virtually impossible to imagine a more inauspicious, tottering live debut. The date was December 4, 1993 and Porcupine Tree ambled on to what can only loosely be described as a stage on the first floor of a pub in High Wycombe … frontman and guitarist Steven Wilson cut a shy figure, fleetingly glancing at the crowd, while appearing conscious that his guitar amplifiers were only supported by four upturned and perilously stacked beer crates.
The interviews are great … Rich should be proud of telling the story so well, and he owes me £20 for the PT albums I’ve bought after reading it.
After consistently releasing stunning works which are as thought-provoking as they are sonically mesmerising, the Hemel Hempstead quartet have slowly been recognised as masters within their field of modern progressive rock, and rightly so.
Wilson started Porcupine Tree in 1987 as a home-studio experiment that has since evolved, live and on an extensive series of records, into an aggressively modern merger of Rush’s arena art rock, U.K. prog classicism — especially Pink Floyd’s eulogies to madness and King Crimson’s angular majesty — and the postgrunge vengeance of Tool.
Based in London, Rocket 88 are a small team of believers. Believers in music, in art, in history, in stories and in rock ‘n’ roll. But don’t take our word for it – here’s a sample of what artists, fans and reviewers are saying about our previous books. You’ll find even more on our main site.
